A "Fender-style" tremolo: the legacy of the 1960s Harmonic Tremolo

The "Harmonic Tremolo" was born in the early 1960s in certain Fender amps (such as the Bandmaster and Vibrasonic). Although its name is historically misleading (it is indeed a volume effect, not a pitch vibrato), its sound is unique: the signal is split into bass and treble, then the effect alternates between these frequency zones, creating a more complex pulse than a classic tremolo. With the 3 Series Harmonic Trem, JHS brings this retro sensation up to date in a portable format, without needing to carry a vintage amp.

For which guitarists and situations?

This pedal is suitable both for musicians discovering effects and for experienced guitarists who want a musical, effective tremolo that is quick to dial in. The standard tremolo mode is perfect for surf, indie, country, or vintage rock rhythms, while the harmonic trem mode adds a more "liquid" and floating dimension, ideal for modern blues, pop, post-rock, and ambient settings. In the studio, it fits easily into a clean or slightly overdriven recording chain; live, its direct controls allow adjusting speed and intensity between songs without hassle.

Simple controls, wide palette: from subtle to hypnotic

The philosophy of the 3 Series is clear: focus on essentials without sacrificing musicality. Volume adjusts the output level (useful to compensate for perceived drop when modulation is deep, or to push the next stage). Rate sets the speed, from slow, wide movements to fast pulses. Depth controls the effect intensity: a light shimmer on a sustained chord or a pronounced tremolo for rhythmic patterns. Finally, the Type toggle changes the modulation character: up for a standard amp-style tremolo, down for JHS's version of the harmonic tremolo, richer and more textured.

The sound

In standard tremolo, the 3 Series Harmonic Trem offers a clear, organic, and steady volume modulation that respects right-hand playing and instrument dynamics. The harmonic trem mode adds a more "3D" sensation: the pulse seems to move across the spectrum with a smoother motion, sometimes close to a swirl impression, particularly flattering on clean tones, open chords, and arpeggios. With slight overdrive upstream, the effect gains character and thickness while remaining clear; with reverb or delay after the pedal, it creates cinematic textures and hypnotic soundscapes.
