An "error" turned cult pedal: the BBC-1 legacy and Dumble lineage

The Fumble was born from a rare story in the effects world: a circuit mix-up at JHS that ultimately revealed an incredibly inspiring clean boost. Originally, JHS intended to include another circuit in a NOTADUMBLE kit but mistakenly used a faithful copy of a much more obscure Dumble preamp box: the Dumble BBC-1.
Rather than burying the issue, JHS owned it, listened to musicians' feedback... and decided to make it a standalone pedal. The Fumble is therefore this JFET preamp highlighted, simplified to the extreme, and offered as an "always-on" tone tool: the kind of pedal that makes no noise, complicates nothing, and improves everything.

Who is it for, which styles, and in what contexts?

The Fumble is aimed at guitarists (and lovers of beautiful clean tones) who want to gain presence, definition, and authority without tipping into overdrive. If you play blues, rock, funk, pop, country, gospel, fusion, or jazz, and are looking for a clean boost that respects the character of your guitar and amp, you are right on target.
It is particularly formidable in three situations: at the start of the pedalboard to "square up" the signal, before a drive section to improve stacking, or at the end of the chain for a simple, immediate volume boost without menus or presets. Live, it's a real comfort; in the studio, it's a secret weapon to get a clean tone that naturally sits in the mix.

Minimalist controls, maximum results: the boost that doesn't adjust like others

JHS deliberately kept the interface as direct as possible: two potentiometers and a footswitch. The idea is not to add options but to offer a tool you understand in 30 seconds and keep for years.
  • Output: overall volume (master) to adjust the output level, from a simple "sweetener" to a true boost
  • Input: atypical control that simultaneously attenuates bass and input gain. Fully clockwise, there is no cut; turning left, the sound becomes thinner, tighter, more controlled
  • True bypass footswitch: signal completely out of the circuit when the pedal is off

The sound

The word that sums up The Fumble is "enhanced clean". We're not talking about a clinical or sterile boost: it's a JFET preamp that gives the feeling your guitar is more "ready," more readable, more stable. Attacks stand out, chords become more articulated, and notes maintain a beautiful elasticity under the fingers.
With a wide setting (Input open), you get a broader, "stronger" clean, perfect for thickening a single coil or adding body to an already very clean amp. With a tight setting (Input reduced), the pedal acts as a tightening tool: tighter lows, sharper attacks, and ideal behavior for pushing an amp into crunch or making a heavily loaded pedalboard cleaner and more dynamic.
And this is where The Fumble stands out: instead of a simple gain knob, you have a control that shapes how the boost "enters" your chain. The result: it can be subtle enough to be invisible... while quickly becoming indispensable as soon as you turn it off.
