A Cult Fuzz Reinterpreted: The Spirit of Kay, the Reliability of JHS

The "Legends of Fuzz" series pays tribute to historic, rare, and sought-after circuits that have shaped decades of guitar tones. With the Mary-K, JHS revisits an atypical fuzz from the late 1960s: the Kay Fuzz Tone, a pedal with an original design (intended to be foot-controlled) and a truly extraordinary character.

Where the original relied on a minimalist and experimental approach, JHS retains the "broken" temperament and vintage identity while adapting it to modern needs: two true potentiometers for quick tone adjustments, and especially an expression input to recapture the idea of foot control but with the flexibility of a modern pedalboard. An ideal bridge between collection and stage.

Who It's For: From Garage Rock to Alternative, and Anyone Who Loves Fuzz with Character

The Mary-K is aimed at guitarists who want a fuzz pedal different from the "smooth" or overly compressed standards. Its natural playground: 60s rock, garage, punk, indie, alternative, massive riffs, cutting leads, and grittier textures for modern atmospheres. It also works very well alongside a light overdrive to thicken the sound while keeping a lively attack.

In the studio, it serves as a strong, immediately identifiable color. Live, the JHS Mode helps the guitar cut through with more pronounced mids. Fans of sounds like The Edge (known to appreciate the spirit of this fuzz) will find an expressive fuzz that can shift from dark velvet to bright aggression with a simple turn of the "Frequency" knob.

Controls, Modes, and Expression: Simple on Paper, Formidable in Practice

The Mary-K goes straight to the point: Volume adjusts the overall output level, handy for balancing your bypass volume or pushing an amp input. The Frequency knob acts as a broad frequency response control: to the left, the sound becomes darker and thicker; to the right, it gains brightness and bite, with a more present high end to make attacks snap.

The "JHS Mode" switch changes the fuzz behavior by increasing saturation and emphasizing the mids: ideal for solos, power chord riffs, and situations where the guitar needs to remain clear amid bass and drums. Finally, the Expression input (via a TRS cable) allows you to control the "Frequency" setting with your foot: perfect for smooth transitions, tonal sweep effects, or simply adapting your fuzz from verse to chorus without touching the knobs.

Note: depending on the environment (lighting, power supply, interference-heavy stage), some expression pedals may add noise. An expression pedal with a plastic chassis and a short cable generally helps keep the signal chain quieter.

The Sound

The Mary-K delivers a granular, organic, and deliberately "untamed" fuzz, with that vintage circuit feel that reacts to your playing. The Frequency control is key: you can aim for a thick, dark low-mid for heavy riffs or, conversely, a brighter, more biting fuzz for leads that cut through. It remains very inspiring on single-coils (nervy attack, more "hairy" texture) while giving humbuckers a massive density.

Like many great fuzzes, it loves interacting with your guitar: slightly lower the instrument's volume to clean up and refocus the grain, then raise it back to regain full saturation. In JHS Mode, the sound gains projection, with mids that provide immediate presence and a fuzz that sits more "up front," ideal for cutting through the mix without pushing volume.
