Summary of This Method
This method dedicated to Gypsy guitar immerses you in the heart of the style, with an approach that is both historical and very practical. It offers a clear overview of the genre's evolution, the influence of Django and his heirs, as well as a focus on the "Selmer myth" and the legendary guitars. The goal is simple: to understand the aesthetics of Gypsy jazz in order to better reproduce it in your playing, whether you are focused on accompaniment, improvisation, or chordal playing.
The rhythmic section emphasizes the pompe, essential for supporting a group and making the swing breathe. Four accompaniment patterns are detailed to improve regularity, projection, and attack precision. On the technical side, the method covers the pick and right hand work (alternate picking, sweeping) to achieve a clear, articulated, and dynamic sound, indispensable for fast phrasing and the typical accents of Gypsy style.
Improvisation is structured around 5 forms and the scale-chord relationship, to build phrases that "tell" the harmony. You work on improvisation over major, minor, and 7th chords, then enrich your language with the use of diminished, chromatic, and whole tone scales. Applications are made in all keys through 20 solos designed to assimilate melodic reflexes and harmonic progressions.
Finally, the method offers a chord melody approach to play melodies in chords, as well as 5 standards (themes and solos) allowing exploration of various colors: swing, waltz, ragtime, or bossa gitane. Thanks to the playbacks, you can practice in real conditions, develop your timing, your sense of chorus, and improvise at will. An included CD accompanies the book to facilitate practice and progress with a rhythmic and motivating pedagogy.
