Summary of This Score

Yggdrasil is a piece by Camille Pepin that relies on a strongly evocative musical narration. In the manner of a contemporary symphonic poem, the work stages the cosmic tree whose roots connect three worlds: Hel, the underworld of the dead; Midgard, the earthly world of humans and war; and Asgard, the celestial city of the gods. This mythological architecture becomes a true musical thread, with an alternation of sound tableaux and progressive transformations of material.

The piece opens with a "misty, blurred" atmosphere: a cold entrance, shrouded in fog, where textures seem deliberately indefinite. From this freezing mist emerges a theme entrusted to the violas and cellos, leading the listener towards Midgard. The discourse warms up, gaining brightness and fluidity, while allowing a darker tension to surface: this earthly world is also one of conflict, marked by episodes with a "martial" character and a more nervous pulse.

After a return to the depths, the work shifts to Asgard, in a "magical" and shimmering episode. The orchestral color brightens notably through the combined presence of vibraphone, marimba, and harp, whose timbres blend to create a floating, luminous, and moving texture, like sacred water iridescent with mother-of-pearl. Then, from this timeless suspension, the music gradually retraces its path back to Midgard, regaining a more lyrical expressiveness before reactivating rhythmic energy and combative breath.

Dedicated to composer Guillaume Connesson, this score highlights a highly crafted orchestration and a clear dramaturgy, ideal for orchestras and conductors wishing to approach a contemporary work that is both descriptive, structured, and rich in color contrasts.
