A Nod to Folk Luthiery: The Cigar Box Spirit in the Kala Range
The Cigar Box series draws inspiration from makeshift instruments once crafted from cigar boxes: simple, expressive instruments made to be played anywhere. Kala revives this concept with modern manufacturing, choosing materials and components designed for stability and comfort. Two designs are offered depending on the desired vibe: Art Deco or Victorian, for a decidedly vintage look both on stage and at home.
For Which Musician and Styles?
Thanks to its concert size and immediate playability, this ukulele suits both beginners seeking an inspiring instrument and intermediate players looking for an original sound and distinctive look. It is particularly comfortable in pop, folk, blues, and rhythmic accompaniment, but remains equally enjoyable for light fingerpicking and fingerstyle playing for more intimate atmospheres.
Sound
The meranti body and top construction offers a balanced response, with present mids and a clear attack, ideal for highlighting rhythmic playing. The choice of a GraphTech TUSQ nut and saddle promotes better vibration transmission: this results in a more precise playing feel, with clearer note definition. Finally, the Aquila Super Nylgut strings provide a warm and dynamic tone, reminiscent of "old school" sensations, while maintaining good tuning stability.
