A New Vision of the UBASS by Kala
Inspired by the California Solid Body UBASS series developed at Kala's lutherie studio in Petaluma, California since 2011, this Solid Body UBASS offers a more "electric bass" interpretation of the UBASS. Its elegant and unconventional body shape is designed for comfort while retaining the compact DNA that made Kala successful.
Who It's For and Suitable Styles
This 5-string electric bass is aimed at beginner to intermediate bassists looking for an easy-to-transport instrument, as well as seasoned musicians who want a reliable backup bass for rehearsals, sessions, or travel. The short scale promotes immediate playability, and the 5th string extends the range for modern styles, from pop to rock, including funk and contemporary music.
Sound
Thanks to its passive Split-Coil pickup, this UBASS delivers a naturally dense and muscular sound, with a clear attack and well-defined lows. The passive electronics emphasize dynamics and touch, providing a direct response ideal for round, punchy, and well-grounded bass lines. The combination of the okoumé body and maple neck contributes to overall balance, with a generous low register and excellent clarity for such a compact instrument.
