Summary of This Score

Jean-Claude Gengembre - Suite de danses (2011) is a suite of short pieces for violin and marimba, written at the request of Duo Contrastes. The title claims a lineage with Bach's Suites for violin or cello, frequently transcribed for marimba, while offering a new writing style that fully benefits from the personality of these two instruments. The marimba, with its wide range (five octaves), allows for a very varied palette of colors between deep lows and bright highs, while the violin provides a "noble" and expressive line, heir to a great repertoire.

The choice of miniatures gives the whole a great freedom: each movement establishes its own atmosphere, explores contrasting horizons, and makes timbres, registers, and styles converse. The suite opens with an Introductory Prelude presenting the two instruments and the originality of their combination. The second movement, Unpredictable Chaconne, is based on a rhythm inspired by Bach's famous Chaconne from the Partita in D minor, playing with the notions of variation and tension.

The Little Nostalgic Waltz recalls the theme of the chaconne: it begins with a reharmonized quotation, then gradually develops it. Its nostalgic character is reinforced by a fragmented writing, made of interrupted impulses and pauses, creating a singular and highly expressive breathing. The fourth movement, Faded Pavane, initiated on a pavane rhythm, unfolds with glissandi evoking flowers bending and withering, in a poetic and finely colored atmosphere.

Finally, Fuoco concludes the suite with a lively and spirited finale, featuring accents of Spanish or Oriental dances, where the rhythmic energy and brilliance of the duo take center stage. This score is aimed at musicians seeking an original, expressive, and contrast-rich violin-marimba duo repertoire, equally suitable for concert performance and chamber music study.
