In a stage or studio setup, the direct box is a central tool to ensure reliable connections between instruments and sound systems. Who is the DX10 for and when to use it?

The DX10 is intended for musicians, technicians, and content creators who need to send an unbalanced instrument or line-level signal to a mic or line input of a console, stage snake, or interface, while reducing the risk of hum and unwanted noise. It is particularly suitable for setups where cables must cover long distances or where the electrical environment is busy (lighting, power strips, backline power supplies, computers).

It is ideal for sources such as a guitar or bass via an appropriate output, keyboards and expanders, or certain audio outputs of equipment with unbalanced signals. By converting to a balanced XLR output, the DX10 facilitates integration into a standard sound reinforcement chain and allows for smoother processing at the console.

Why balance a signal?

A DI primarily serves to convert a high-impedance unbalanced signal into a low-impedance balanced signal. Practically, this helps carry the signal over longer distances with less susceptibility to interference, and sends it cleanly to a mixing console for equalization, dynamics, and routing.

Passive DI: simplicity, reliability, efficiency

Unlike an active model, a passive DI like the DX10 requires no power supply. This choice is relevant when you want a reliable, ready-to-use box that is easy to deploy on stage. The transformer plays a key role here: it ensures the conversion and contributes to isolation, with permalloy shielding designed to improve protection against RF interference.

Level handling: coping with strong sources

The DX10 specifies different maximum input levels depending on the attenuation setting. This allows adapting the DI to various sources, from moderate signals to higher levels, while maintaining a usable output to the console. This margin is especially useful when switching between instruments, line outputs, or equipment with higher output levels.
