With the Moai Maea, KMA Audio Machines delivers a modern reinterpretation of "old-school" analog octaver sounds. The idea is not to offer clinical polyphony, but rather an organic and raw sensation: a 1 octave up with a gritty, slightly fuzzy grain that evokes the textures of the late 60s and early 70s, and massive sub-octaves that turn your guitar into a bass machine. Handmade in Berlin, it is aimed at guitarists (and bassists) who want character, movement, and real depth under their fingers.

Who Is the Moai Maea For, and Which Styles Does It Excel In?

The Moai Maea is designed for musicians who build a "wide" sound with few notes: monophonic riffs, expressive leads, aggressive bass parts, or heavy low-tuned pads. It excels in rock, garage, stoner, grunge, alternative metal, but also in ambient and experimental music when used as a texture generator.

On stage, it is a formidable pedal to switch from a normal sound to a huge impact on a chorus or break. In the studio, it becomes a sound design tool: stacking voices, sculpting the mix, then placing effects in the clean signal loop to create very clear parallel layers in the mix.

Controls, Modes, and Design: Everything to Shape Your Octave

The strength of the Moai Maea lies in its "mixer" approach: you adjust the original signal level via CLEAN, then separately dose OCTAVE +1, OCTAVE -I, and OCTAVE -II. This allows you to go from a simple foundational boost to a full stack (octave up + one or two sub-octaves) creating a compact wall without losing attack or clarity.

The sub-octave selector lets you choose -I, -II, or -I/-II (both) to adjust the huge low-end "push." Regarding footswitches, each section is designed for the stage: SHRIEK activates the octave up, DRONE activates the sub-octave section, and a bypass footswitch cuts everything. The pedal offers a buffered serial effects loop placed in the clean path, ideal for adding chorus, delay, or reverb only to the original signal while keeping the octaves solid and centered.

Finally, an internal phase inverter (via an internal DIP switch) helps prevent phase cancellations when mixing processed and unprocessed signals. Note: like many analog octaver circuits, the Moai Maea is designed for monophonic playing. On chords or complex intervals, it may intentionally produce artifacts and a more chaotic texture, which can become an effect in itself.

The Sound

The octave up section is clearly oriented towards "octave fuzz": an acidic, sharp register with a grainy side that highlights harmonics and grabs the pick. It delivers that vintage bite reminiscent of classic historical octave up colors, perfect for making a lead stand out in a dense mix.

The sub-octaves are the "foundation" part: thick, dark, and physical, they give a gritty bass impression and low-end that fills the room. Combining -I and -II produces an impressive subsonic mass, excellent for minimalist riffs, heavy breaks, and arrangements where the guitar must take a near-synth role. Thanks to the clean mix, you retain attack and definition even with a lot of octave level.
