A "63" Spirit: Tube Warmth and Vintage Overdrive in a Modern Format
The Koch 63'OD was designed as a tube guitar preamp capable of capturing the legendary grain of vintage saturations: thick mids, natural compression, and that organic "push" feel that defined the 60s and 70s. Its name clearly evokes this golden era, but the approach is decidedly modern: you retain the authenticity of the tube circuit while benefiting from comprehensive connectivity adapted to modern rigs (console, recording, monitoring, power amp).
At the heart of the unit, a 12AX7 tube operates at high internal voltage to deliver dynamic response and progressive saturation. The result: an overdrive that reacts to your attack, guitar volume, and pickup choice, while remaining controllable in very different setups.
For Whom and For What: From Plug-and-Play Pedalboard to Touring Rig
The 63'OD is aimed at guitarists who want to take their sound everywhere without relying on a specific amp. In rehearsals, it becomes a reliable nerve center: plug in, select your channel, and immediately find your familiar settings. In the studio, the DI XLR with speaker simulation provides a ready-to-use signal while preserving the feel of a tube. On stage, it can feed a power amp, a monitor, a monitoring system, or directly the front of house.
In terms of styles, it naturally excels in blues, rock, classic rock, and all aesthetics seeking a singing overdrive and present mids. The Clean channel, focused on clarity and full-band response, is also very suitable for ambient, modulation, or delay pedals, maintaining a clean and readable foundation.
Controls, Loops, and Connectivity: Ergonomics Designed "Like a Real Preamp"
The Koch 63'OD offers two channels with a shared 3-band EQ. The Clean channel has a dedicated Volume, while the Overdrive channel features Gain and Volume to separately adjust saturation level and output level. An OD Boost switch adds an extra gain stage to thicken the drive, make a solo stand out, or switch to a more aggressive register without changing your base setting.
To perfectly integrate your effects, you have two distinct loops : the Pre-FX Loop (unbuffered) is ideal for placing shaping pedals before the preamp, while the Post-FX Loop (fully buffered) secures the end of the chain for delays, reverbs, and modulations, with a stable and coherent signal. Switching is announced as silent (no click) and accompanied by LED indicators, a real plus live.
Finally, the 63'OD takes care of integration in advanced rigs: a Remote Control input allows the use of a MIDI switcher or external switching system. And to power some essential pedals, a 9VDC output is available (up to 200 mA ) with short-circuit protection.
The Sound
The Clean channel aims for a clear, balanced, and spacious reproduction, ideal for preserving your guitar's character and serving as a platform for pedals. The Overdrive channel delivers what is expected from a vintage-oriented tube preamp: dense mids, progressive saturation, and a natural sustain feel without losing articulation. The behavior is expressive: lowering the guitar volume often yields a milder clean-crunch, and playing harder thickens the grain with typically "tube" compression.
With the OD Boost, the 63'OD easily shifts from bluesy to more driven rock, maintaining a clear attack and controlled high end. The speaker simulation on the DI XLR output provides a coloration designed for recording and PA, to achieve a more "finished" sound than a raw line output.

Questions frequently asked
Can the Koch 63'OD be connected directly to a mixing console?
The balanced XLR DI output REC/PA provides a line level with speaker cabinet simulation and ground lift. It allows a direct connection to a mixing console or a PA system.
What tube does this guitar preamp use?
A 12AX7 operates at 285 VDC in the preamp circuit. This configuration contributes to the progressive overdrive and dynamic response.
How to use the effects loops of the 63'OD?
The unbuffered Pre-FX Loop is designed for effects placed before the preamp. The fully buffered Post-FX Loop is intended for delays, reverbs, and modulation effects. Two separate jacks thus allow organizing the effects chain according to their function.
Is the Monitor output compatible with a power amplifier?
The Monitor output offers a switchable level at 0 dBV for a power amplifier. The -10 dBV and re-amp settings allow connection respectively to an effects return or the Clean channel input.
What power supply is required for this tube pedal?
The required power supply is 12 VAC. A 9 VDC output protected against short circuits can power pedals up to 200 mA.
