The Lakland 44-02 follows a simple philosophy: to offer a modern, reliable, and stage-ready bass with components and a sonic approach directly inspired by the USA 44-94. Here, you find the LH3 pickups and the 9V-powered LH3 preamp, along with a control ergonomics designed to switch from a precise, snappy tone to a more massive and rounded register without losing definition.

Thanks to its MM-J configuration and active preamp, the 44-02 targets the intermediate to advanced bassist who wants to cover many genres with a single instrument: funk, pop, rock, gospel, R&B, fusion, variety, or studio sessions. The Lakland tapered neck and 34" / 863 mm scale length provide a familiar feel, with a clear attack and comfortable playability across the entire fingerboard.

The Sound

The ash body generally delivers a sharp attack and good presence in the midrange/upper midrange, ideal for maintaining clarity in a band setting. The combination of Lakland MM-J pickups and LH3 preamp allows precise sculpting of the spectrum: the humbucker-format bridge pickup, paired with a 3-position coil tap, shifts from a dense, modern tone to more open textures, while the J-style neck pickup adds definition and articulation. The active EQ (bass, midrange, treble) with cut/boost serves both to "cut through" a mix and to round off the sound, and the internal switches enable adjusting the midrange boost/cut frequency according to your playing style and amplification.
