Larsen Strings Sovereign 4/4 D - Medium

A Soloist Approach Designed for Projection

The Sovereign set is part of a modern approach to cello performance: providing the player with a direct response under the bow, clear intonation and a strong sonic presence. It stands out for its balance between power and finesse, preserving the instrument’s personality without sacrificing the clarity of its attacks.

This configuration prioritizes a consistently controlled playing feel. Each string is designed to remain stable as the playing grows in intensity, from the most delicate passages to the most demanding lines. The result is a structured tonal palette, particularly suited to cellists seeking precision across all registers.

For Demanding Cellists, from Practice to the Stage

This string set is primarily intended for advanced intermediate, experienced and professional musicians looking to enhance their cello’s projection and responsiveness. Its precise character facilitates bow work, position changes, clear attacks and gradual dynamic shading.

Sovereign strings are particularly well suited to classical, Romantic and contemporary repertoire, as well as to musicians seeking a reliable response in chamber music, orchestral or concert settings. Their balance between definition and warmth preserves an expressive musical voice, even in passages with a wide dynamic range.

The Sound

The set’s construction is based on two complementary approaches. The A and D strings feature a solid steel core with stainless steel winding. This design promotes a clear response, accurate pitch and stable articulation, making it ideal for bringing out melodic lines in the upper and middle registers.

The C and G strings feature a steel rope core combined with tungsten winding. They deliver a broad, responsive low end, with a welcome density under the bow. The special C string, featuring a double tungsten winding, provides greater texture and depth while retaining a musical warmth that is particularly beneficial in the low register.

The set produces a powerful, articulate sound capable of supporting solo playing without becoming harsh. Attacks remain clear, while the stability makes it easier to control dynamics, from a controlled pianissimo to a projected fortissimo.

Long-Lasting Stability Through Rehearsals

Designed to support regular, demanding practice, this string set is characterized by a particularly long lifespan. This durability helps preserve its precise response, clear articulation and overall balance for longer.

The medium tension provides a balanced compromise between playing comfort, resistance under the bow and projection. It is well suited to cellists seeking a firm, reliable playing feel without losing the flexibility required for phrasing and dynamic nuance.
