Historical Background and Positioning within the Range
The bendir is a frame drum deeply rooted in the traditions of North Africa and, more broadly, in the great families of frame drums found throughout the Mediterranean basin and the Middle East. Following in this tradition, Latin Percussion offers a modern interpretation of the instrument, faithful in spirit while adapted to today’s requirements for comfort, reliability and tonal consistency.
At Latin Percussion, this version belongs to the LP Frame Drums family, a range developed to pay tribute to traditional instruments using durable materials and careful craftsmanship. Founded in 1964 by Martin Cohen in the wake of New York’s Latin jazz scene, the brand has built its reputation on instruments designed for working musicians. The design work behind the Frame Drums line also benefited from the input of percussionist Randy Gloss, further reinforcing its serious positioning within the range.
Who Is This Bendir For?
This bendir is equally suited to curious percussionists looking to discover frame drum playing and experienced musicians seeking a reliable instrument for the stage, teaching or the studio. Its internal tuning system gives beginners peace of mind, while the adjustable cords provide experienced players with genuine scope for exploration.
It naturally fits into Eastern, North African, Mediterranean and fusion repertoires, but also works very well in ambient music, world music, acoustic accompaniment, musical theatre or hybrid percussion setups. Thanks to its 16-inch size, it remains responsive enough for fast passages while retaining convincing low-end support for broader strokes. This versatility makes it an excellent choice for anyone looking for an expressive instrument without moving to an overly cumbersome diameter.
