Historical Context and Positioning in the Range

Before the arrival of LP's Afuche/Cabasa, this type of percussion was mostly found in the form of handcrafted instruments (coconut shells and seeds), often prone to wear. LP modernized the concept to offer a reliable and consistent alternative, suited to the demands of stage and studio. The second patent filed over thirty years ago by Martin Cohen helped establish this cabasa as one of LP's iconic hand percussion instruments.

Target Audience

This cabasa is aimed both at beginners seeking an intuitive instrument and experienced percussionists looking to expand their dynamic range. It naturally fits into Latin, Afro-Cuban, funk, pop, reggae styles and in studio settings to double a shaker, thicken a groove, or craft clean and precise offbeats.

Features and Innovations

The design is based on endless steel chains fixed around a cylinder with a special stainless steel coating, which promotes a clear attack and even response. The instrument is designed to create countless rhythmic patterns: you can rotate the chains around the cylinder for a continuous, granular sound, or shake the cabasa for a shorter, more punchy response, ideal for accentuating syncopations or energizing a chorus.

Sound

The LP Afuche/Cabasa produces a dry, bright, and textured timbre, with very clear granulation in the mix. When rotated, the sound becomes more "continuous," perfect for steady sixteenth notes or gradual crescendos. When shaken, the impact is more immediate, akin to a powerful shaker, with clear projection.

The wooden handle provides a sense of control and facilitates dynamics: varying pressure on the cylinder, rotation speed, and accentuation of attacks. The result is a highly expressive hand percussion instrument, capable of shifting from a simple rhythmic bed to precise, articulated phrases.
