Summary of This Method

To this day, Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) remains one of the most prolific composers for wind instruments, despite being a violinist himself. His Twelve Études-Caprices for Saxophone will enable the pupil to attain brilliant technique on the instrument.

During his training at the Conservatoire de Paris, Bozza won prizes in violin, conducting, and composition, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He then conducted the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and became director of the Conservatoire de Valenciennes, while continuing a recognized composing career.

In this collection, each étude aims to prepare the student for the major challenges encountered in advanced saxophone playing: complex rhythms, demanding melodic lines, and fine control of sound parameters. You will find targeted work on tessitura, leaps and intervals, embouchure control, breath management, legato and phrasing, articulation, as well as dynamics management.

Because these are caprices, the studies favor musical momentum and liveliness rather than a strict formal framework. They thus constitute a particularly effective tool to strengthen virtuosity, precision, and expression, while maintaining an artistic dimension. An essential resource to support a saxophonist's progression toward a more confident, freer, and more accomplished playing.
