Légère: engineering serving a modern reed since 1998

The Légère reeds were born from the meeting of scientific research and instrumental practice. Since 1998, Guy Légère (chemist and clarinetist) and Mark Kortschot (composite materials specialist) have developed an approach aimed at reproducing the acoustic qualities of a cane reed while improving consistency and longevity. The result: a synthetic reed designed to meet the demands of musicians, including in contexts where intonation, stability, and register homogeneity are crucial.

Made from polypropylene, this reed uses a molecular alignment process allowing precise adjustment of stiffness and density. Légère adds no fiberglass or harsh additives, with a material declared non-toxic and suitable for food contact, for worry-free daily use.

For whom, and in which styles

This reed is intended for clarinetists of intermediate to professional level who wish to switch from cane to synthetic without sacrificing a sound aesthetic suited to the classical repertoire. Its rounder and darker color allows it to maintain a natural place within a section, in chamber music, wind orchestra, or classical ensemble.

It is also suitable for musicians who alternate rehearsals, concerts, and travel: the stability of the synthetic material limits variations related to humidity and temperature, helping you maintain consistent playing references. The strength 3 generally corresponds to a "medium" resistance, often chosen to balance control, flexibility, and projection (the feel remaining dependent on the mouthpiece, opening, and embouchure).

Sound and design

On an Eb clarinet, the reed plays a major role in balancing brightness and roundness. Here, the thicker tip contributes to a darker and more "centered" sound, while promoting a clean attack and stable note holding. This design helps preserve a homogeneous color across registers, with a supported low register and a more controlled high register.

In terms of playing, a synthetic reed that does not absorb water maintains a consistent response: fewer surprises from day to day, and a stable sensation during the session. The density and stiffness of polypropylene are designed to approximate the behavior of cane, with comfortable blowing and more constant intonation in delicate passages.

Finally, the practical aspect is decisive: no fibers degrading as with a natural reed, no swelling related to humidity, and a disinfectable reed for a simpler routine, especially in contexts of lessons, orchestra, or frequent playing.
