Studio Cut: a Légère benchmark designed for stage and studio

Developed by Légère, a brand recognized for its synthetic reeds since 1998, the Studio Cut series positions itself as a more flexible alternative to the Classic, with a clear goal: to offer a warmer tone and a more comfortable playing feel in contexts where nuance, roundness, and velvetiness are sought.

At the origin of this approach is the collaboration of two complementary profiles: Guy Légère, chemist and clarinetist, and Mark Kortschot, composite materials specialist. Their work aims to closely reproduce the stiffness and density of a traditional cane reed while ensuring particularly consistent manufacturing stability.

For which tenor saxophonists?

This Légère Studio Cut reed is primarily intended for intermediate to professional tenor saxophonists who want a smooth response and a warm sound. It is especially appreciated in jazz (standards, bebop, swing, big band, combos), but also suits pop and amplified contexts where a clean attack and a homogeneous sound without excessive effort are desired.

At strength 3.5, it generally represents a marked resistance: a good choice if you already have a stable embouchure, like to maintain firmness under the teeth, and seek a dense sound with good support in the mid-high register.

Sound and design

The Studio Cut favors easy projection and a warm timbre, with a response designed for dynamics and control. The feel is softer than the Classic, which encourages a more "singing" style, very useful for jazz phrasing, light attacks, and controlled note endings. Since the reed does not absorb water, it maintains appreciable stability (intonation and response) from one piece to another, even under stage lights or during long sets.

Made from non-toxic polypropylene, it is designed without added fiberglass or other chemicals. The molecular alignment process allows fine adjustment of stiffness and density to closely mimic the feel of a cane reed while gaining in consistency and longevity.

Recommended compatible accessories

For direct compatibility and safety, a reed case or box in tenor saxophone size is recommended to protect it between rehearsals. For maintenance, a disinfectant spray suitable for instrument accessories can be useful, as this reed can be disinfected.
