Vandoren V16: a reed born for jazz musicians

Launched in 1993, the Vandoren V16 series was developed to meet the expectations of jazz saxophonists, particularly in the search for a thicker reed and a more "substantial" feel at the onset. Its positioning is clear: to offer a reed that maintains firmness, handles dynamics, and encourages expressive playing, while remaining responsive enough for modern articulations.

Vandoren, a historic reference in reeds and mouthpieces, controls its entire production chain from cane to packaging. The brand also emphasizes a waste valorization approach, reusing cane scraps notably as fertilizer or energy source for the factory.

For which saxophonist and styles

This reed is particularly suited for intermediate to advanced saxophonists seeking a solid response and a sound that "projects." It is very well suited for jazz aesthetics (bebop, hard bop, swing, funk-jazz, fusion) and any situation where a clear attack and strong presence in the mix are desired (big band, brass section, amplified stage).

Its calibration, which may seem a bit firmer than some "generalist" reeds, often pairs excellently with a jazz-oriented mouthpiece to unleash a wide and expressive sound.

Sound and design

Thanks to its thicker tip and long facing, the V16 promotes stable sound production, with a noticeable sense of control in attacks and note endings. The result is generally a bright timbre, with good density, and the ability to remain homogeneous when pushing air to gain projection. At strength 2.5, one often achieves a good balance between ease of vibration, intonation, and stability, depending on the mouthpiece and tip opening used.

Recommended compatible accessories

To preserve the performance and lifespan of your reeds, a protective case for alto sax reeds (flat storage) and an alto sax swab are relevant choices, as they help limit residual moisture and deformation. If you use a metal or ebonite mouthpiece, a compatible alto sax ligature can also influence response, but exact compatibility depends on the mouthpiece model.
