Summary of This Method

This method by Eric Boëll is a clear and practical guide to understanding and mastering the fundamentals of improvisation, with a particular emphasis on the codes of variety and jazz. It begins with an in-depth study of the major scale : its structure, analysis, chord notation, and common difficulties, not forgetting the essential relationship between scales and chords. The book also introduces the modal chart, its use, and solid foundations of harmonic analysis to better navigate tonality.

The Improvisation Practice section develops directly applicable techniques: note skipping, chromatic approaches, disjoint intervals, rhythmic variations, and arpeggio work (with inversions and exploitation methods). A chapter dedicated to swing helps build a more natural phrasing through understanding strong/weak beats, metronome work, and the difference between binary and ternary rhythms.

You will then deepen your knowledge of the pentatonic scale (structure, connection with chords, addition of chromaticism), followed by modulation with precise techniques, the use of modulating notes, and a practice plan for effective progress. Finally, the method details the famous II V I : definition, harmonic variations (including tritone substitution), practical applications for improvisation, and sequences (by whole steps, fourths, chromaticism, thirds...) with advice on how to practice them. The last part on mode technique (modal calculation, altered intervals, consonance/dissonance, the "sound" of each mode) completes the set to build coherent, expressive, and stylistically credible solos.
