Summary of This Score
This volume 3B of Plaisirs du chantcontinues the tradition of the previous volumes: offering a rich, demanding, and motivating musical playground to develop the voice methodically. The pieces, deliberately placed in a "medium" tessitura, allow approaching the repertoire without strain, while refining the fundamentals: intonation, breath, phrasing, articulation, and line quality.
With a clearly pedagogical aim, much of the repertoire is written at a fairly slow tempo. This choice makes the work more subtle: connecting notes without heaviness, supporting each note, animating the text, and shaping nuances. Pages such as Die Lotosblume, Das Verlassene Mädgdelein, Romance, Lungi da te, or Cancion de Cunainvite the performer to great musical sensitivity, with particular attention to colors, breath, and fine nuances.
The collection also opens a door to style: for some airs, it is noted that before the end of the 18th century, ornaments and variations were often improvised. The simple ornament suggestions heard on the CD can thus inspire imagination and encourage a lively interpretation. Also noteworthy is the choice of Italian text for Charles Gounod's La Rondinella, as well as vocal range advice: the entire collection can be sung by female or male voices, with some usage exceptions (for example, Das Verlassene Mädgdeleinis more suited to a soprano voice).
Finally, the recording was designed to support students without pushing them to "force": two voices (soprano and tenor) to vary timbres, and a solo piano accompaniment useful for preparation before in-depth musical work with an accompanist.
