Summary of This Score

Commissioned by Swisstuba.ch for the Geneva International Tuba Competition (January 2020), this solo tuba work offers a demanding and inspiring approach to the contemporary repertoire. The notation is organized on two staves: the upper staff groups the "singing inside the instrument" voice, inspired and expired breaths, as well as ossia (performance options), while the lower staff is dedicated to the "normal" tuba playing. This layout allows precise work on the coordination between instrumental sound, vocal production, and breath control, central elements of the writing.

In this piece, Gérard Buquet aims to convey a contemporary language that has marked his musical journey, paying tribute to three major figures of the second half of the 20th century: Helmut Lachenmann, Gérard Grisey, and Pierre Boulez. These references are part of a musical approach focused on expanding playing techniques and enriching the tuba repertoire. Con voce is dedicated to Fabien Wallerand, Swisstuba.ch, and the young tubists of the Geneva International Tuba Competition, making this score a relevant resource for artistic work, competition preparation, and the exploration of contemporary techniques.
