Summary of This Score

Written on the occasion of a commission from the Apostrophe ensemble (soloists of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice) for a "carte blanche" concert featuring several works by the composer, Note-bookstands as a deliberately free and inventive step between two larger-scale projects. The idea is that of a charcoal sketchbook: short, immediate, sometimes playful forms where the writing explores the moment, gesture, and color, while remaining demanding for the ensemble.

The cycle consists of five distinctly contrasting pieces. Le Pic-vert, originally written for piccolo and piano, is reinvented to join the "woody" material of the strings: the rhythmic energy and incisive line take on a new dimension, closely aligned with the attack and articulation of the quartet.

With Harmoni(qu)es(originally for piano, 2001), the score transforms into meditative passages where harmonics (natural and artificial) become a true song: a fine work on intonation, resonance, and sound shaping, ideal for developing collective listening and balance between layers.

Tangopays homage to the universe of Astor Piazzolla: pulse, expressive tension, and play on accents give the quartet a voice that is both elegant and biting. In contrast, Beatles-maniaclaims a more "rock" writing, with angular timbres, deliberate roughness, and a group dynamic that emphasizes rhythmic cohesion.

Finally, Gagakuopens a suspended parenthesis with Japanese colors, notably evoking the Shô (mouth organ) and its tuned aggregates. A poetic conclusion, full of nuances, where the management of sustained notes, balances, and resonances becomes the heart of the discourse.
