This score highlights the art of the Nocturne, born from 18th-century outdoor night instrumental music, and brought to its peak by Chopin. While Mozart and Haydn wrote "Notturni" for various ensembles, John Field is recognized as the creator of the piano Nocturne, to the extent that Chopin held him in high regard and had his students practice Field's Nocturnes to perfect legato and tone quality.

Chopin composed 21 Nocturnes : some compositional details remain difficult to date precisely, but their publication dates provide reliable reference points, with three published posthumously. Within these pages, the composer's romantic soul fully expresses itself: twilight atmosphere, lyrical impulse, melancholy, and poetic improvisation, in a spirit reminiscent of the dialogue between the Muse and the Poet.

While often maintaining a form close to the Lied (A.B.A.), Chopin elevates the genre through exceptional pianistic sense: broad melody inspired by Italian bel canto, expressive ornamental variations (often chromatic), daring harmonies, and ingenious accompaniments (arpeggios, broken chords, singing bass lines). This newly revised and corrected edition (June 1993), under the direction of Dominique Geoffroy, offers an excellent gateway to Chopin's aesthetic and a solid foundation for preparing the study of his other works.
