This piano concerto takes its title from the work of American archaeologist and philologist Emily Dickinson Townsend Vermeule, Aspects of Death in Early Greek Art and Poetry (1979), specifically from a chapter entitled "On the Wings of the Morning: the Pornography of Death." The work is part of a reflection on sudden death, disappearances, and mythological figures of hybrid creatures (Harpies, Sphinxes, Sirens) whose seduction leads to fatality. This reference does not serve an illustrative purpose: rather, it opens a mental space, a chiaroscuro phantasmagoria where the imagination surfaces without ever becoming narrative.
The orchestra appears as a tumultuous mass, traversed by a conflicting dynamic. The combination of clarinets and trombones, conceived as a paradoxical material, colors the whole with a harsh tint: bitter presences, gloomy prosaicism, vaulted resonances. Musical time then presents itself as a sequence of transitional moments, an unstable thread rather than a linear unfolding.
The piano, far from a decorative role, is placed in a situation of resistance and survival, compared to that of a convict in Faulkner's Wild Palms. As the exposed soloist, it must "brush against the abyss": intensify the material, shape the energy of the movement, stand firm against the orchestral surge. Commissioned by Westdeutscher Rundfunk Köln, the work is dedicated to Nicolas Hodges and was premiered on 11/30/2012 in Cologne, conducted by Ilan Volkov.
