Summary of This Method

This comprehensive Music Theory course for the 2nd year offers a progressive approach designed to consolidate fundamentals while developing true musicality. As in the first volume, the first lesson begins with recognition games to establish listening, memorization, and fundamental reflexes. Each lesson is then built around three complementary pillars: listening drawn from the repertoire, an original melody composed by Benoît Menut, followed by a series of oral and written exercises that deepen the technical and musical understanding of the styles and elements addressed.

The method is organized into five clearly identified chapters. The Listening chapter places the ear at the center of the work and opens the student to varied aesthetic worlds. The Listening Exercises enhance precision: sight dictations, various recognitions, interval work, dictations, and error detection. The Readings section develops note and rhythm reading, with or without notes, and includes sung readings to mentally, vocally, and internally connect what is read.

The Theory chapter structures discoveries made through practice, in the spirit of pedagogy where experimentation precedes theorization. Finally, the Homework section is designed to encourage student autonomy, with a carefully graduated progression. Students who have already started an instrument will also be able to easily and enjoyably play many of the proposed texts or excerpts: a fun activity that promotes progress and facilitates the link between the instrument lesson and the Music Theory course. This method, created by Marguerite Labrousse, Yann Liorzou, and Benoît Menut, allows teachers freedom of initiative while offering a solid framework conducive to musical and poetic openness.
