Summary of This Book

This music theory manual covers the skills expected in the 8th year while emphasizing an essential reality: the correspondence between "year" and "level" varies from one institution to another, depending on the pace of work and the time devoted to music theory. The book is therefore both structured and adaptable, to suit different pedagogical progressions.

The volume is divided into six chapters, organized either by musical form (chorale, prelude, quartet), by era (contemporary works), or around a technical specialization (sight-reading and transposition). In the chapters related to musical forms as well as the one dedicated to contemporary works, all sections of music theory are engaged: the student develops a comprehensive musical understanding by linking analysis, inner hearing, reading, rhythm, and notation.

The "Sight-Reading" chapter offers more systematic training, designed to strengthen automatic skills and precision. It is structured around rhythmic reading (through exercises and musical texts) and clef reading, then intonation and intervallic challenges addressed progressively, in direct connection with reading. Sight dictations complement this work as the written counterpart of intonation, fostering reactivity and accuracy of analysis. Finally, eight sung readings drawn from the repertoire allow the student to apply their skills to interpret, phrase, and convey musical meaning.

Key strength of the method: the chapters are not intended to be studied in the order of pagination. The teacher can freely "navigate," alternating themes (forms, contemporary, sight-reading, transposition) to build a coherent progression, maintain student engagement, and precisely target needs (clef reading, musical dictation, intonation, transposition).
