Summary of This Score

With Les Désinences, Michaël Levinas explores what he describes as the "tears of sounds": those subtle pitch inclinations and internal beats that arise in the piano's resonance, in contact with its strings and harmonics. The work relies on a very fine listening to the attack transients and the sound's gradations, transformed into compositional material and harmonic trajectories.

The piece is based on a rhythmic and harmonic polyphonic writing, often conceived as a kind of chorale whose inner lines are richly ornamented. The increasingly complex progressions and modulations echo certain historical practices (French Baroque, late German Baroque), while asserting a decidedly contemporary language through the use of MIDI keyboards and new pitch scales.

The instrumental work highlights specific playing techniques : management of half-pedaling, broad legato, voice leading and broken chords, with a touch approach that can evoke, in spirit, substitution and legato techniques close to organists and jazz musicians. After an initial sketch for solo piano, the development at Ircam deepened the variations on the endings, attacks, and the creation of non-tempered scales played on MIDI keyboards, making harmony and polyphony a reciprocal causality at the heart of the form.
