Summary of This Score

With Little Italy, Bruno Mantovani presents a demanding and intensely modern piece for solo viola, conceived as a challenge to the instrument. The goal is not to make the viola sing in a purely lyrical role, but to construct a tight polyphonic texture, giving the impression of multiple voices within a single performer. This writing highlights the viola's ambiguous and rich timbre, while employing an extended palette of playing techniques.

The polyphony here arises from several complementary techniques: the establishment of multiple planes (percussive attacks followed by resonances that may evoke reverberation), the intrusion of a contrasting cell interrupting a regular motif (the rapid shift from one idea to another creating an effect of simultaneity), and the superposition of distinct periodicities, each assigned to a different string. These elements contribute to a sensation of density, relief, and constant internal movement.

The form is structured by energy and the confrontation of musical ideas, demanding very high technical mastery from the violist: rhythmic precision, control of resonances, rapid changes of articulation and gesture, all while maintaining narrative continuity. The ending reveals a more lyrical melody, like a timbral signature, but the whole remains driven by a dynamic of progressive transformation of the material, particularly noticeable on the rhythmic level.

Finally, the title Little Italyrefers to a New York neighborhood marked by cultural polyphony and also reflects the creative journey of the work, begun in New York and completed in Rome. This score is intended for violists attracted to contemporary repertoire, sound exploration, and virtuosic solo pieces.
