Summary of This Score

Composed for a concert at Carnegie Hall in 2005, Happy B. by Bruno Mantovani is part of a commission by the New York ensemble Sospeso: several composers were invited to write short chamber pieces in tribute to Pierre Boulez's 80th birthday. The ambitious project, in its "miniature" format, aims to honor the conductor, composer, thinker, and institution builder who have marked the music of our time.

Rather than directly quoting Boulez's universe, Mantovani chooses an idea both simple and playful: the song "Happy birthday to you" opens and closes the work. This material, deliberately transformed through changes in register and color, becomes a reference more suggested than asserted, sometimes almost imperceptible, like a wink hidden within a very contemporary writing style.

Between these two boundaries, the discourse remains constantly in motion. The score favors a fluid trajectory, with material that metamorphoses without ever "fixing" itself: on one hand, linear processes where a continuous idea gradually disintegrates in the first half of the work; on the other, a logic of motivical development where cells transform, restart, and recombine. The flute occupies a central place, supported by a very "flutistic" virtuosity and an energetic gesture that can evoke, by resonance, certain emblematic pages associated with Boulez.

Written for flute, violin, viola, and cello, this contemporary chamber music score is particularly suitable for ensembles seeking a short, brilliant, and structured piece, ideal for concert performance as well as advanced educational programs. Happy B. is above all a celebration: of energy, modernity, and a musical thought in perpetual renewal.
