The horn occupies a singular place: it asserts itself mainly in the central phases of each section and fully reveals itself in the third movement, "noon light," where it is heard with a solo presence. Before that, it is tinged with shadows thanks to the mute; afterward, it favors stopped sounds, extending the play of perspectives and textures.
