Summary of This Score
Conceived from 2007 and sharpened by the study of Bach's cantatas, this creation marks a turning point in Gérard Pesson's career: the encounter with electronics and a form of virtual lutherie. The score unfolds a "theater of lights and intermittences" where instrumental gestures, sound objects, and amplified textures build a dramaturgy without explicit action but rich in atmospheres and images.
The form presents itself as a series of numbers, often brief, linked or not, reconnecting with a baroque découpage (movements with variable configuration, dance rhythms, alternation between soloists and ensemble). The writing remains resolutely contemporary: the electronics do not seek brilliance or spectacle but a vanishing point of listening, sometimes indistinguishable, which puts the poem under tension and relief.
The work on the sample becomes here a true "keyboard of sensations": voices, breaths, winds, rains, distant noises, clocks, or birds feed a sonic wonder box, whose seams remain deliberately perceptible. The electronics, deliberately non-spatialized, blend with the instruments and voices (amplified) to create a homogeneous and centered sound, like an inner set serving the speech.
In "God's Grandeur," based on four poems by Gerard Manley Hopkins, the music is divided according to poetic units associated with "acoustic skies": electronic monochromes and minimal sound cycles (deep lows, ultra-highs, impressions of a starry sky) on which voices and instruments are laid. A glass keyboard dialogues with samples of a real organ, in a hieratic, dark cantata, very sung and recitative, designed for performers comfortable with fine balances between ensemble, amplification, and electronics.
