Summary of This Score

This clarinet and piano score offers a captivating immersion into the evolution of tango, in four pieces each depicting an era and atmosphere. Through a decidedly contemporary language, the music retains the soul of tango while opening it up to harmonic colors and a more "concertante" writing style, ideal for enriching a recital program.

Bordel 1900 takes us back to the origins: a lively, cheerful tango full of momentum and eloquence. The duo seeks spontaneity here, with incisive rhythms, a nervous pulse, and a character that is willingly theatrical. The clarinet can shine through the flexibility of its articulation and rapid dynamic changes, while the piano establishes rhythmic relief and the spirit of dance.

Café 1930 marks the shift toward a tango that is listened to more than danced. Slower, more romantic, often melancholic, this movement invites broad and singing phrasing. The clarinet lines gain expressive depth, and the piano accompanies with richer harmonies, giving the whole an intimate, almost confidential color.

Night-club 1960 reflects a period of exchange and blending: tango reinvents itself, disrupts its codes, and embraces rhythmic modernity. The energy is more urban, more tense, with a very "stage" impact. Precision work between the two instruments becomes essential to highlight accents, syncopations, and contrasts.

Finally, Concert of Today opens the door to contemporary tango, with reminiscences of new music (Bartók, Stravinsky, and others) set against a tango backdrop. This last piece features more ambitious writing, where clarinet and piano explore textures, dynamics, and colors, for a finale that is both modern, elegant, and oriented toward "the tango of the future".
