Composed in 1838, the "Kinderszenen" belong to the period when Robert Schumann wrote almost exclusively for solo piano, alongside major works such as Carnaval (Opus 9), Fantasie (Opus 17), and Davidsbündlertänze. Far from being mere "children's music," this Opus 15 is conceived as a retrospective gaze: Schumann evokes a remembered childhood filled with tenderness, intimacy, and grace, with an apparent simplicity that actually demands great subtlety of touch and expression.
This edition emphasizes the reliability of sources: the editor relies on the autograph manuscripts for certain pieces (1, 6, and 7), then on the first edition, and in cases of ambiguity, on the second edition.
