Giuseppe Tartini (1692-1770) presents the Rules for Learning to Play the Violin Well as a useful guide for all musicians, both singers and instrumentalists. The reader quickly discovers that the goal is not to revisit the basics of instrumental technique, but to delve into the heart of style : how to ornament a melodic line tastefully, vary a repeat, enrich a musical discourse without overloading it, and above all construct coherent, idiomatic, and expressive improvised cadenzas.

This edition offers the translation of an undated Italian manuscript preserved in Venice, providing direct access to a pedagogical approach from one of the great European centers of violin playing. Tartini, founder and director of his school in Padua for over forty years, conveys here a demanding vision of musicality: ornamentation is never merely decorative; it serves the phrase, the breathing, the affect, and the rhetoric. The text thus proves particularly relevant for approaching the repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries, and for refining the listening of characteristic accents, inflections, appoggiaturas, diminutions, and connections in interpretation.

The volume also includes a new translation of the Lettera alla signora Maddalena Lombardini, formulated as a series of recommendations addressed to a student. These advices complement the Rules with a more direct approach to daily practice, discipline, and how to achieve a convincing sound in the service of the music. The translation of the original documents was carried out under the responsibility of Pierre Séchet, assisted by Lorenzo Brondetta and Christian Pointet, with a layout announced as particularly meticulous.
