Historical Context and Positioning in the Range
The Armory series stands as a "performance" cornerstone at Mapex, designed to offer refined finishing and design solutions inherited from higher-end ranges. It notably incorporates the spirit of accessories and approaches developed on the brand's premium kits (such as the SATURN IV inspiration), aiming to provide an instrument ready to withstand rehearsals, concerts, and studio sessions, with a distinctive sonic identity and excellent stability.
Who This Drum Kit Is For
This Mapex Armory targets intermediate to advanced drummers seeking a serious kit capable of shifting from a "punchy" setting to a more open tuning without struggling with tuning. Its configuration and projection make it very comfortable in rock, pop, metal, fusion, and contemporary music, both on stage and in recording, with a 22" bass drum that immediately lays down a solid foundation in the mix.
Features and Innovations
The SonicClear bearing edges optimize the drumhead-to-shell contact to improve tuning precision, response consistency, and the presence of useful harmonics. The new SonicClear shell suspension system reduces stress on the shell to promote sustain and tom resonance. On the floor tom, the enhanced SonicClear legs contribute to a broader resonance and a rounder note feel, useful for maintaining body at both low and high volume levels.
Sound Characteristics
The Birch/Maple/Birch construction combines two complementary characters: birch provides a sharp attack, good definition, and projection that reads easily live, while maple adds warmth, midrange cohesion, and a more musical sustain. At 6-ply and 7.2 mm, it achieves an ideal compromise between control and openness, with toms that remain precise even when tuned low.
The Tomahawk metal snare (steel) adds the expected bite and power: plenty of presence, a crisp snap, and excellent rimshot response. The Powerhoop 2.3 mm hoops reinforce the feeling of solidity, stabilize tuning, and accentuate impact, while the Remo heads provide a reliable base to sculpt the sound according to your style and sticks.
