Historical Context and Positioning in the Range

The Meinl Byzance series holds a special place in the world of professional cymbals: a decidedly artisanal approach focused on musicality and personality. The Extra Dry variant is positioned as one of the most "modern" in the Byzance family, featuring a raw aesthetic and surface treatment designed to limit brightness, shorten resonance, and densify the grain. This 18-inch china fits within this philosophy: a cymbal with character, designed to bring an immediately recognizable color to the kit.

Who This Cymbal Is For

The Byzance Extra Dry China 18" is primarily aimed at intermediate to expert drummers seeking an expressive accent cymbal that is easy to control. It excels in contexts where marked impacts are desired without overwhelming the mix: modern jazz, funk, RNB, electro, hybrid music styles, alternative pop, and studio sessions. If you play loudly and densely (powerful rock/metal), it can also work in contrast, but its DNA clearly leans toward nuanced dynamics and dark textures.

Features and Innovations

This china relies on an effective combination of manufacturing choices: thin weight for quick vibration, full hammering to enrich the spectrum and add "relief" under the stick, and a typical Extra Dry surface treatment (raw look) that dries out the cymbal. The result: a clear accent, a very direct feel, and a cymbal that naturally blends with dark crashes, dry rides, or stacks. In a groove- and sound design-oriented kit, it becomes a full-fledged musical tool, both for marking breaks and coloring patterns with short touches.

Sound Characteristics

The core of its character comes from the B20 alloy (copper-rich bronze), renowned for its depth and ability to generate a complex spectrum. On this Byzance Extra Dry, this complexity does not translate into prolonged brightness but rather a dark grain, an "earthy" feel, and more contained projection. The sound is typically dark, with a very musical "dirty" edge that fits well in modern mixes.

In playing, the attack is explosive and immediately identifiable, then the cymbal fades quickly thanks to its short sustain. This sound envelope (fast attack, short decay) is valuable in the studio: you get a clear accent without needing excessive filtering or compression, and the china does not "bleed" into snare or tom microphones. The relatively low pitch and naturally moderate volume reinforce this sense of control while maintaining the true personality of a china: biting, textured, and instantly expressive.

This cymbal is also very interesting for modern stick techniques: shoulder hits for dry slaps, lighter strokes for short sizzles, and accents at phrase ends to add a sonic signature. In a Byzance kit, it brings a high-end "special effects" color but also pairs well with more traditional cymbals when a contrast is desired: drier, shorter, more textured.
