Meinl VR-CAJ2GO - VIVA RHYTHM CARDBOARD

Historical Context and Positioning Within the Range

Inspired by the traditional cajon used in many contemporary styles, this model revisits the concept with an ultra-practical approach: a foldable one-piece cardboard structure. It positions itself as a portable and accessible solution, designed for rehearsal, animation, rhythmic initiation, and all situations where a easy-to-transport instrument is desired without sacrificing playing enjoyment.

Who This Cajon Is For

This cajon is aimed at beginners as well as intermediate musicians seeking a simple, effective, and quick-to-deploy instrument. It is particularly suited for acoustic and semi-acoustic contexts: pop, folk, variety, world music, guitar-vocal accompaniment, percussion workshops, school interventions, or impromptu sessions. Its lightness also makes it an excellent choice for traveling musicians and facilitators.

Features and Innovations

Made from a single flat piece, this cajon transforms into a full-size instrument by simple folding, with no complex adjustments. The fixed internal timbre ensures a consistent response: it easily achieves a clear separation between rim shots (snare effect) and center hits (bass). Its structure is designed to remain stable and reliable in use, with a stated load capacity of 150 kg, providing reassurance for daily use.

Sound Characteristics

Unlike wooden cajons (often made from birch, maple, or mahogany) that rely on fiber density and elasticity to shape attack and sustain, here the cardboard offers a direct and surprisingly projected response for its weight. The sound prioritizes efficiency: a round and naturally deep bass at the center, and a clear snappy attack on the upper striking surface, ideal for marking the backbeat.

The internal timbre strongly contributes to the "snare" sensation: it adds grain and presence, helping the cajon stand out in a small acoustic ensemble. To optimize the sound, players can vary dynamics (from fingertips to palms) and striking zones (rim versus center) to change colors and volume.
