A Modern Interpretation of the Great Tradition of Tube Microphones, Centered Around the M 7 Capsule

The M 92.1 S builds on the heritage of great studio tube microphones by placing the famous M 7 capsule at the heart of its design. This choice is no accident: the M 7 is renowned for its balance and musicality, with a natural presence that highlights the texture of a voice without overpowering it. Here, it is combined with a large-diameter double diaphragm architecture (gold-plated plastic), with capsules selected to optimize polar pattern consistency and stability of the sound from one unit to another.

Within the studio range, the M 92.1 S positions itself as a primary microphone: a centerpiece designed for demanding recordings where one seeks both character, operating silence, and sensitivity. Its design also emphasizes practicality during sessions, with a dedicated power supply that integrates polar pattern selection and power on/off.

What Applications Is the M 92.1 S Designed For?

The M 92.1 S is aimed at studios, advanced home studios, and sound engineers looking for a tube condenser microphone capable of becoming a standard in the booth. Its sound is particularly convincing on vocals (pop, rock, jazz), voice-over, and soloists, thanks to its full low-midrange and the sense of breadth typical of tube microphones.

The ability to choose between omni, cardioid, and figure-8 also makes it an excellent placement tool: cardioid to isolate a voice in a medium-sized room, omni to capture more air and naturalness, or figure-8 for stereo techniques (Blumlein, MS) and face-to-face duos. Note: the maximum sensitivity is achieved on the axis perpendicular to the microphone's main axis, a useful point for fine-tuning orientation during critical takes.

EF86 Tube, Dedicated Power Supply, and Switchable Polar Patterns: Character Without Compromise

Tube Electronics Designed for Musicality

The internal preamplifier is based on a pentode EF86 configured as a triode with a high gain factor, chosen for its sonic qualities. This topology contributes to the sensation of depth and density while maintaining good attack clarity. The result is a microphone capable of adding body to voices and instruments while remaining precise enough to fit into a modern mix.

UN 920.1 Power Supply: Control and Stability in the Studio

The UN 920.1 power supply provides the capsule bias voltage as well as the DC voltages necessary for the microphone preamp. Polar pattern selection (omni, cardioid, figure-8) is accessible via a selector integrated into the power supply, designed for quick changes during sessions. For long-distance setups, the design allows for adjustment: beyond 50 meters, it is recommended to have a technician adjust the filament voltage to 5.8 V to maintain optimal operation.

Connectivity and Finishes: Ready for the Booth

Regarding integration, the system is designed for a professional environment: at the back of the power supply, there is a mains connector with voltage selector, a 7-pin Tuchel connector to power the microphone, and a 3-pin XLR output for audio. The microphone is offered in satin nickel or matte black finishes, to suit both a vocal booth and a recording stage.
