The Denner: a large bass in the Baroque spirit of Mollenhauer

The Mollenhauer Denner bass recorder embraces a decidedly Baroque aesthetic approach: baroque fingering and pearwood body, to recover an organic touch and sound color. Designed as a demanding "large bass," it aims for precise response and exemplary stability across registers, with an instrument capable of nuanced expression, articulation, and confident modulation.

For which musician and styles?

This bass recorder is primarily intended for intermediate to advanced musicians seeking an expressive and reliable instrument for ensemble work. Its "Baroque" orientation makes it particularly comfortable in early music, consort playing, chamber music, but also in ambitious pedagogical contexts (recorder classes, conservatories) where tone control, intonation, and projection are crucial.

Sound and design

The dark-stained pearwood provides a distinctive sound signature: a woody timbre, a natural presence in the midrange, and a beautiful color coherence across registers. The straight articulation of the headjoint contributes to a direct projection, useful in ensemble playing and concert situations. The low air consumption facilitates sound production and allows for long, singing lines, while retaining room for more virtuosic passages.

The G and E keys optimize ergonomics on a bass recorder: they allow for wider finger holes, which promotes a stable sound and reliable response, especially in the low notes where the instrument must remain solid and homogeneous.

Recommended compatible accessories

This Denner comes with a very complete set of accessories to start playing and maintain the instrument daily: case with strap, adjustable spike, thumb rest, microfiber cleaning swab, joint grease, fingering chart, and maintenance manual. With this equipment, you already have the essentials for transport, posture, and care of the joints.

Excellent recorder. Even before playing it in speaks easily the higher register, the keywork ir excellent, and gives multiple options for certain notes to make fingering easier. Really stable tune, you can blow hard or soft, and only the volume changes (within a reasonable range of velocities). The sound is beautiful, rich and proud yet soft and melodious. Like all bass recorders, the lowest few notes are quiet, but the eavenness of the sound otherwise is really good.
The thing that strikes me the most is the agility of this big instrument. I can really easily play fast passages and the recorder reacts immediately. Also it doesn't take too much air to play, for me the limiting factor is how long can I hold air in before needing to breathe rather than me running out of air playing.
The only thing that wass missing from the packet was the recorder oil, though not a thing I need immediately. Joint grease came in a nice tube instead of the typical jar, so a tiny bit less greasy fingers after the set up. The joints are really tight in a new instrument, so careful lubrication of the joints is necessary.
The only downside in a new recorder is the tightness of the joints combined with the extensive keywork, so there is only a tiny space where to grab the instrument to separate the parts. for this I recommend careful greasing of the joint, both inside bore and the outside cork, as the tightness pushes out some of the grease out of the joint. So thin and eaven layer is much better than thick but spotty application.
    Summa summarum, an excellent recorder.

A real pleasure to play precise, round sound, sufficient volume without blowing the interpreter out of breath.
A lot of musical joys in the offing
