A Full-Size Take on the Sugar Drive Spirit
The Fat Sugar follows directly in the footsteps of the MXR Sugar Drive: it shares the same sonic philosophy, but in a wider enclosure with the traditional MXR format. The Sugar Drive is presented by the brand as an overdrive based on a rare and highly sought-after circuit ; in practice, it is generally associated with the Klon-style overdrive family, renowned for their transparency, refined character, and ability to enhance an amp without overpowering it.
An Overdrive Designed for Dynamic Playing
The MXR Fat Sugar Drive is equally suited to guitarists looking for their first quality drive and experienced musicians seeking a warm boost, a touch of grit to enrich a clean sound, or an overdrive that stacks easily with other pedals. It naturally fits into blues, rock, pop, indie, classic rock, and even in front of an already pushed amp to tighten the attack and add depth. Its standard format makes it particularly easy to integrate into a stage or studio pedalboard.
Three Effective Controls, an Internal Buffer, and Plenty of Headroom
The recipe is simple yet remarkably effective: Volume for the output level, Tone to open up or soften the highs, and Drive to control the build-up of saturation. The footswitch activates or disengages the effect, with a red LED providing an instant indication of the pedal's status. By default, the Fat Sugar operates in true bypass, but an internal switch enables buffered bypass when the situation calls for it. Power can be supplied by a 9V battery or a 9V power supply, while the voltage doubler contributes to the sense of openness and effortless response under your fingers.
The Sound
The Fat Sugar delivers an open, articulate, and musical overdrive, with a real sense of detail in the attack. The low end remains full, the mids never become intrusive, and the pedal retains enough clarity to work equally well as an enhanced clean boost or as a primary drive for anything from vintage to modern tones. The feel under the fingers is smooth, responsive, and very close to an amp starting to work hard. Among the artists associated with it, Equipboard notably lists Dean Wareham and Towa Bird, while the Sugar Drive from the same family also appears in setups associated with Fredrik Ă kesson, Bonnie Raitt, and Christone " Kingfish " Ingram.

Questions frequently asked
What kind of sound does the MXR Fat Sugar Drive offer?
The circuit delivers an open overdrive with a defined attack while maintaining a full low end. The Volume, Tone, and Drive controls allow it to be used as a warm boost or as a main drive.
Does the Fat Sugar Drive operate with a pedalboard power supply?
It requires 9 VDC with a current draw of 18.5 mA. A Dunlop ECB003 type adapter or an equivalent 9 VDC pedalboard power supply is compatible.
True bypass or buffer: what is the setting on this pedal?
The bypass is set to true bypass by default. An internal switch allows activation of a buffered bypass, useful depending on cable and pedal setup. The maximum output level announced in true bypass without buffer reaches 26 dBV.
Can it be used as a boost in front of an already driven amp?
With up to 50 dB of gain at 1 kHz, this overdrive can tighten the attack of an already pushed amp and add definition.
What does Stock B mean for this MXR?
The Stock B label indicates that signs of use and/or unboxing may be present on the pedal. The model reference is M94SE.
