Introduced in 1997 as a more affordable alternative to the venerable U 87, the Neumann TLM 103 has established itself as a modern classic. Its conical grille and capsule inherited from the K67/87 lineage continue the "Neumann sound" while adopting a more contemporary, present, and immediate signature.

Originally designed for project studios and broadcasting, the TLM 103 is now at home in large studios as well as demanding home studios. It excels on lead vocals, voice-over, and podcasts, but also shines as a close mic on drums, guitar amps, piano, cello, or double bass when definition, impact, and a clear image are sought.

Features and Sound Signature

The TLM 103 uses a large diaphragm capsule derived from the U 87, combined with a TransformerLess circuit to preserve transient speed and reduce background noise. Its frequency response includes a broad presence boost above 5 kHz: vocals gain intelligibility without harshness, and solo instruments stand out naturally in the mix.

Solid Low End, Reference Mids

A notable feature is its low end, which remains deep but perfectly controlled, ideal for resonant vocals, low strings, and close sources that require body without overflow. The mids, a Neumann hallmark, provide authority and cohesion in the mix placement.

Cardioid Versatility
