The Essentials to Know About the Saturate Software
The Essentials to Know About the Saturate Software
- Spectral Clipper derived from the technology popularized in Elevate, designed to push levels without unbalancing the timbre.
- Up to 24 dB of overdrive with controlled saturation, without a "muddy" effect or bloated lows.
- SHAPE Control for smoothly transitioning from a clean hard clipping to an ultra-smooth curve, ideal for mixing and mastering.
- Gain and metering tools (INPUT/OUTPUT, AUTO level) with curve display and peak and RMS metering.

What Saturate Is For
Saturate is a saturation and clipping plug-in designed to add density, perceived loudness, and harmonic character while preserving tonal balance. Where a classic clipper can harden highs, hollow out the body, or make the low end "muddy," its spectral clipping approach aims for a more musical, stable, and easier-to-dose distortion.
It can be used on individual tracks (vocals, drums, bass, synths, guitars) as well as on buses (drum bus, instruments, mix bus) or even at the very end of the chain to gain headroom and presence before a limiter. Whether you produce electronic, hip-hop, modern rock, or pop, Saturate meets a simple need: push louder without breaking the color.
Main Features
Spectral Clipping: More Drive, Fewer Unwanted Effects
The core of Saturate relies on a sophisticated processing engine that allows increasing overdrive while maintaining a coherent frequency signature. You can aggressively raise the input level to thicken a signal, enhance a kick's attack, stabilize a bass, or make a vocal stand out, all while limiting the emergence of a dull or "tubby" sound often associated with poorly controlled saturation.
SHAPE: From Soft to Hard, Seamlessly
With its SHAPE control, Saturate lets you vary the clipping shape between two extremes: a very gradual soft clipping (useful for rounding transients and gluing a mix) and a more pronounced hard clipping (perfect for gaining level and impact). This continuous morphing makes it easy to find the "just right" setting without switching algorithms or multiplying plug-ins.
Gain Control: Precise, Fast, and Consistent
Saturate features independent INPUT and OUTPUT levels, making gain staging simple and reliable. The AUTO mode automatically adjusts the output level to easily compare processing at similar perceived loudness, a real advantage for making decisions by ear without being fooled by simple louder gain.
Visual Feedback and Production-Oriented Metering
A saturation curve display and a dedicated meter show how the signal interacts with the selected clipping shape. The input and output metering, mastering-grade, displays both peak and RMS levels, useful for controlling overall energy, monitoring peaks, and securing the next stage in your chain (EQ, compressor, limiter).
Anti-aliasing, Symmetry, and Ceiling: Cleaner, Richer, More Controllable
Version 1.10 adds an anti-aliasing mode designed to reduce aliasing artifacts more effectively than simple oversampling, preserving a cleaner high end, especially on bright sources or aggressive settings. You also have a Symmetry control to introduce more even harmonics for a sense of richness and warmth, as well as a Ceiling parameter to set the clipping threshold and lock the clipping behavior precisely.

Questions frequently asked
Is Newfangled Saturate compatible with macOS and Windows?
Compatibility covers macOS 10.14 and later, on both Intel and Apple Silicon processors, as well as Windows 10 and later.
Does Saturate's anti-aliasing mode reduce artifacts?
The anti-aliasing mode added in version 1.10 reduces aliasing artifacts more effectively than simple oversampling. It helps preserve a clean high end on bright sources and heavy settings.
How to adjust the output level and clipping threshold?
INPUT and OUTPUT levels are independent to allow precise gain staging. AUTO mode automatically adjusts the output level to ease processing comparison. The Ceiling parameter sets the clipping threshold.
What is the SHAPE control for?
The SHAPE control continuously changes the clipping shape between progressive soft clipping and more aggressive hard clipping. This variation allows rounding transients or increasing level and impact.
Is Saturate suitable for vocals, bass, or a drum bus?
On a vocal, bass, or drum track, spectral clipping thickens the signal and enhances the attack. On a drum bus or mix bus, peak and RMS metering monitor peaks before the next stage.
