Summary of This Score

This collection brings together 15 piano pieces by Herbert Howells, presented in a carefully prepared edition, transcribed and established by Jonathan Clinch. Published for the first time, the set highlights a lesser-known facet of this major English composer, offering works ranging from the very first documented piece, The Arab's Song (written at age 16), to the Petrus Suite, completed when he was over 80 years old.

Throughout the pieces, one follows the evolution of Howells' writing: a sense of harmonic color, restrained lyricism, and a taste for evocative atmospheres. The volume also emphasizes his stylistic interests, notably his fascination with French music (with titles like Phantasy or Harlequin Dreaming ) and his attraction to Tudor aesthetics (for example Pavane and Galliard ), offering a piano repertoire that is both expressive, refined, and very "singular."

There is also a particularly touching tribute to his friend and colleague Gerald Finzi: his rest. Thanks to this diversity of forms and moods, this book is aimed both at enthusiasts of Howells and 20th-century English music and at pianists seeking new concert pieces or musical study material off the beaten path.
