NS Design: Innovation Serving Amplified Playing

Founded in 1990 by award-winning instrument designer Ned Steinberger, NS Design develops electric instruments that combine technology and tradition to meet the demands of today's musicians. Within the brand, the WAV series stands out as a particularly coherent entry point into the world of electric violin: a performance-oriented approach, immediate playability, and a sound designed to remain musical, natural, and usable in amplification. The goal is clear: to retain violinist's familiar references (attack, nuance, control) while benefiting from the advantages of an instrument designed for the stage and modern setups.

For Whom and Which Styles?

The NS Design WAV is aimed at the motivated beginner violinist as well as the intermediate (and even advanced) musician who wants to take the leap into amplified playing without struggling with the instrument. It is well suited for contexts where an acoustic violin can become difficult to manage: loud rehearsals, stage with drums, monitors, effects, or direct recording. In terms of styles, it feels comfortable in pop, rock, folk, electronic, film music, worship, as well as jazz and fusion whenever you seek precise attack and well-defined notes. Its design emphasizes control, tuning stability, and consistency-essential qualities for clean metronome practice as well as holding a full set on stage.

Sound

The WAV's sonic signature relies on the Piezo Polar system, a technology capable of analyzing the direction of string vibrations to improve bow response and facilitate technique (grip, articulation, string-to-string transitions). The exceptionally powerful piezo crystals require no power supply: this results in efficient and consistent pickup without battery maintenance. The desired outcome is a full and natural note, with clear attack definition and dynamics suitable for expressive playing.

Since the electronics are passive, the behavior is direct and simple: a volume control and a tone control that acts as a treble cut to round off the timbre if needed. This approach is ideal if you want to start with a clean sound and then shape it via an amplifier, preamp, audio interface, or effects. The construction also highlights playing comfort: the ebony fingerboard, hand-graded, with asymmetrical relief, contributes to a smooth feel under the fingers, aiding both intonation and speed.

Recommended Compatible Accessories

To fully utilize the instrument, plan for a violin bow and rosin if you don't already have them. For string replacement, preferably choose standard steel-core strings (solid or wound core): they are particularly suitable for electric use. It is advised to avoid nylon (Perlon) or gut strings on this type of setup.
