A "studio" approach to compression in pedal format

Compression is an essential tool to smooth out volume differences, enhance note sustain, and highlight playing details. While some compressor pedals deliberately seek a marked coloration, the NUX Komp Core Deluxe Mk2 aims for clean, transparent, and controlled compression, with a more "outboard studio" feel: you gain balance and articulation while preserving the personality of the guitar, bass, or even a keyboard. It positions itself as a premium and versatile option in a compact format, designed to become a permanent link in your signal chain.

For whom, for which styles, and in what situations?

The Komp Core Deluxe Mk2 is suitable both for guitarists discovering compression (and wanting an immediate, musical result) and for advanced musicians seeking a compressor that can go unnoticed or, conversely, become a real sound-shaping tool. In clean settings, it excels for funk, pop, country, blues, and anything requiring a consistent level and clear attack. With a more pronounced setting, it adds sustain for leads, arpeggios, and chord parts that need to stay "up front" in the mix.

In the studio, it helps secure takes (better controlled peaks, more homogeneous dynamics). On stage, it provides immediate comfort: fewer variations between strings, better-controlled presence, and a more stable sound from one song to the next. It is easily placed at the beginning of the chain (after the tuner) to tame the signal, or after certain distortions if you are looking for a different smoothing effect.

Settings, controls, and usage ideas

With its five potentiometers and switch, the Komp Core Deluxe Mk2 offers complete dynamic control. The Volume adjusts the output level to compensate for compression (or to push the amp / next stage). The Sustain controls the amount of compression: the higher you set it, the more the signal is "held" and the notes are lengthened.

The Clip control adjusts the level sent into the compressor (input gain): useful for optimizing the circuit's response according to your pickups' output level, avoiding an overly squashed feel, and refining behavior on strong attacks. The Tone adjusts brightness: helpful to restore airiness after marked compression, or conversely to tame an overly present high end.

The star here is the Blend: it mixes the dry signal and the compressed signal, which corresponds to parallel compression. The result: you can achieve effective compression while retaining the impact and natural dynamics of your playing. The pedal also features a sidechain compression approach, designed to maintain a cleaner and more controlled sound, especially when pushing the settings. Finally, the Attack switch offers two attack/release time behaviors: a slower setting (letting more transient through) or a tighter one, very useful for adapting the response to humbuckers, active pickups, a bass, or simply your picking hand.

The sound

The Komp Core Deluxe Mk2 stands out with a transparent and precise character: you mainly perceive a more "polished" sound, with better-calibrated notes, improved string-to-string clarity, and a more singing sustain when desired. Thanks to the Blend, you can maintain a very natural "always-on" logic (ideal for cleans and crunches), or move towards a more audible effect, with tighter playing and a more uniform attack. The dynamics remain responsive: by adjusting Sustain and Attack, you choose exactly how much attack to keep and how smooth the signal becomes.
