A "Rig in a Box" in the Tradition of Orange Expertise

At Orange, the idea is clear: to capture the DNA of the brand's British amplifiers in a pedalboard format that is robust and stage-ready. The Guitar Butler belongs to the "Butler" family by adopting the concept of a complete preamp designed to cover as many situations as possible: playing at home, recording, rehearsing, handling a fly-date, or having a reliable backup on tour.

Rather than a simple overdrive, this is a true guitar preamp pedal: two channels, precise EQ, and connectivity designed for both amps and direct-to-PA setups. The result is a coherent Orange solution to regain character, grain, and presence without relying on a head amplifier.

Who Is It For and In What Contexts Should It Be Used?

The Guitar Butler is aimed at guitarists who want to centralize their tone around a quality preamp: cover musicians, rock bands, studio guitarists, or fans of "ampless" pedalboards (without an amp). The Clean channel serves as an ideal platform to stack gain pedals, while the Dirty channel manages crunch, vintage rock, and thick leads without resorting to digital distortion.

In live settings, it's perfect for a modern configuration: XLR to the PA (with cab simulation) and, if needed, a dedicated output to a power amp or amp loop return to keep a speaker cabinet on stage. In the studio, the XLR output simplifies recording solid and reproducible takes with a true preamp feel.

Features, Controls, and Connectivity: Designed for the Pedalboard

Each channel has its own tone shaping to precisely sculpt your grain. The Clean channel offers Gain + 3-band EQ (Bass, Middle, Treble) and is particularly "pedal-friendly": you can feed it your drives, fuzz, and boosts upstream while maintaining a clear and musical base. It also includes a compressor to smooth attacks and stabilize levels, useful for funk rhythms, pop, or clean arpeggios.

The Dirty channel is based on a JFET circuit to emulate the response of a tube amp: sharp attack, natural compression, and a "push" sensation when increasing volume. Controls include Gain, 3-band EQ, Presence, and especially two volumes (Volume 1 / Volume 2) footswitchable : a powerful feature for solo boosts without changing your gain level.

Regarding integration, Orange has included the essentials: 6.35mm Jack input, buffered effects loop (Send/Return), and two complementary outputs. The Amp Out 6.35mm Jack delivers a signal without Cab Sim (ideal for a power amp, loop return, or amp input depending on the desired sound), while the balanced XLR output includes the Cab Sim for direct connection to a console or interface. A Ground Lift switch is provided to reduce hum caused by ground loops in complex setups.

Sound Character

The Guitar Butler's character is distinctly "Orange": a rich midrange presence with a grain that stands out well in the mix. The Clean channel targets a vintage, spacious, and balanced aesthetic: it adds warmth to humbuckers and highlights the sparkle of single coils while remaining neutral enough to serve as a platform for your pedals.

The Dirty channel delivers organic, dense, and responsive saturation: from edge-of-breakup crunch to a well-supported overdrive, with a dynamic playing feel (especially when pushing volumes). The Presence control opens the high end to shift from a rounded crunch to a more cutting lead. The overall sound remains musical and usable for blues-rock, modern rock, as well as thicker textures in alternative, punk, or indie styles.
