Summary of This Method

Designed as an accessible gateway to jazz drumming, this method guides you step by step through the most common rhythms of the style. The goal is to help you establish a solid and musical playing, clearly understanding the role of the drums in a jazz context: placement, pulse, swing feel, and accompaniment serving the group.

The book is structured around three complementary chapters. The first focuses on swing and chabada, to acquire the flow, regularity, and proper articulation essential to make the tempo "breathe." The second chapter addresses brush playing, an essential skill to vary colors and work on finesse while maintaining rhythmic stability. Finally, the third chapter explores various jazz grooves to expand your vocabulary and enable you to accompany with greater ease.

For each theme, the method offers some approach exercises, then quickly emphasizes musical applications to play in a concrete and motivating context. The work is not just theoretical: you learn to build credible accompaniment, position yourself on a chord progression, and develop automatisms usable in rehearsals as well as on stage.

A real asset: each application example is accompanied by three recordings. You can first listen to and isolate the drum part, then hear how it fits with the playback, before playing yourself along with the playback alone. An effective way to combine listening, understanding, and playing pleasure, while gaining autonomy.
