Summary of This Method

This method from the Backing Tracks collection is aimed at aspiring pianists and keyboardists who want to practice improvisation in the Slow Jazz realm, between jazz ballad and slow jazz. The core of the work is based on 10 chord progressions carefully designed to reflect the harmonic colors of the style: some evoke the spirit of great standards (in the vein of "Fly Me To The Moon," "Summertime," "Autumn Leaves," or "All The Things You Are"), while others adopt a more modern approach, with richer voicings and more elaborate chord movements.

Each progression is conceived as a complete training ground: you will encounter essential jazz sequences (notably II-V-I and I-VI-II-V ), as well as key techniques to add depth to your choruses, such as chromatic approaches, tritone substitutions, and cadences conducive to tension/resolution. The result: you work on harmony, melodic logic, scale and arpeggio choices, as well as the ability to develop a coherent musical narrative.

To maximize progress, each of the 10 progressions is offered in 5 keys, clearly indicated, totaling 50 accompaniments. The associated recordings perfectly complement the book: you have 50 mp3 audio files in long versions (to take your time laying down ideas, varying motifs, working phrasing and space), as well as 50 mp4 video files displaying the chord scrolling. This visual aid facilitates navigation through the form, anticipation of chord changes, and selection of the right melodic tools at the right moment, whether you practice on computer, tablet, or smartphone.
