Summary of This Method
Open-handed playing consists of leading the beat and rhythms with the left hand, playing the hi-hat or ride cymbal with that hand. This approach profoundly transforms your sensations on the drum set: you gain independence, coordination, and control of placement in a way that traditional right-handed playing does not solicit in the same manner.
By taking the driving role, the left hand changes status: it is no longer just an accompanying hand but a true leading hand. The result: it strengthens, becomes more consistent, and you gain freer access to the entire kit. Since it is no longer blocked by the right hand above it, movements (snare, toms, cymbals) become more efficient and comfortable, especially in fast transitions and groove orchestrations.
The ultimate goal of this work is to move toward ambidexterity: being able to play your patterns leading with either the right or left hand. Without necessarily aiming for this level from the start, this method helps you acquire more "usable" dexterity in daily practice: integrating new rhythms led by the left hand while retaining some right-hand automatisms depending on the musical context.
This pedagogy is also aimed at left-handed players using a right-handed drum setup, offering them a natural way to lead the rhythm without changing their configuration. The CD, which includes a good portion of the numerous examples, serves both as a demonstration and a practice tool to refine sound, articulation, consistency, and feel.

Questions frequently asked
Does this drum method include a CD?
A CD is included and contains a good portion of the many examples from the method.
How to practice cross-handed playing on the drums?
The method places the left hand on the hi-hat or ride cymbal to lead the time and rhythms. This lead frees the right hand for movements to the snare drum, toms, and cymbals.
Is cross-handed playing on the drums suitable for left-handed players on a right-handed kit?
This approach is especially aimed at left-handed players using a drum kit set up for right-handers. The left hand can thus lead the rhythm without changing the setup. The practice aims to develop a more natural rhythmic lead in this configuration.
What technical aspects are covered with the CD examples?
The CD demonstrations serve to refine the sound, articulation, consistency, and feel based on the provided examples.
Is the Marcel Frédéric method in French?
The book is a drum method in the French language, focused on the independence and coordination of the left hand.
